Although the wireless broadband access system is developing rapidly, its development is limited due to some disadvantages , such as small capacity of bandwidth and small coverage . The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is one of the important technologies for last mile broadband wireless access . The WMN can integrate with multiple wireless systems , such as Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN), and Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN), to improve the performance of the wireless network and enlarge the coverage range . With the wide applications of the WMN, the IEEE 802 standard group is devoted to promoting the development of the WMN technology and establishing the related technical standards . At present, WMN standards have appeared in IEEE 802 . 11s , 802 . 15 , 802 . 16 , and 802 . 20 .

The continuous increase of data transmission density in wireless mobile communications has posed a challenge to the system performance of Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs ). There is a rule for wireless Ad hoc networks that the average node capacity decreases while the number of nodes increas es , so it is hard to establish a large - scale wireless Mesh network. Network scalability is very important for enhancing the adaptive networking capability of the wireless Mesh network. This article discusses key s calability technologies for Mesh Base Stations (BSs ) and Mesh Mobile Stations (MSs ), such as channel allocation , intelligent routing , multi- antenna , node classification , Quality of Service (QoS ) differentiation and cooperative transmission .

Combining the performance advantages of both Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Ad hoc network, Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is characterized by large capacity, high rate and wide coverage . It has become an effective means for broadband wireless access and can be applied flexibly in various wireless environments . The wired connections between base stations in traditional cellular mobile communications systems can no longer satisfy the requirements for flexible deployment, low cost, high scalability and good reliability. The wireless Mesh architecture for IP - based base stations is thus introduced as an optional solution to support the flat and simplified next generation mobile communications networks . The key technologies used to support self- organization of IP - based base stations involve several aspects , including on - demand self- organization of base stations , joint radio resource scheduling mechanism, routing , security and network management.

The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) has become a focus in res earch of wireless broadband communications . In a switching technologies - based wireless Mesh network, the entire network is regarded as an IP subnet, so it cannot be applied in situations where large coverage is required . The use of cooperative relaying technologies can improve the transmission rate and reliability of wireless link; while the wireless Mesh network, once integrated with cooperative relaying technologies and routing technologies , can improve its spectrum efficiency and cover a wide area . However, there are many problems to be solved with respect to standardization , key technologies research and industrialization . Therefore , the application of cooperative relaying technologies in wireless Mesh networks is still a great challenge .

The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a special kind of Ad hoc network with a hierarchical network structure . Its backbone transmission network has such characteristics as multi- hop , topology stability, no electricity supply constraints , convergence of flows . Improving the spatial reuse of spectrum is an effective approach to increas e network capacity. The linchpin of this approach is to effectively control the interference range between wireless links . The multi- channel networking technology is one of the key technologies of WMN, and its core is the channel allocation through which the channel utilization can be maximized . The mutual interference between multi- hop wireless links should be considered when choosing the routing metrics in WMN. Through the load - balancing routing method , the network capacity and throughput of nodes can be improved .

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a new- type wireless network. Its core idea is that any of its wireless equipment can act as both an Access Point (AP ) and a router. Each node in the network can s end and receive signals as well as directly communicate with one or several peer nodes . One important issue to be considered in wireless Mesh networks is how to secure reliable data transmission in multi- hop links . To solve the problem, the 3GPP system architecture proposes two functionalities : ARQ and HARQ . This paper presents two HARQ s chemes , namely hop - by- hop and edge - to - edge , and three ARQ schemes : hop - by- hop , edge - to - edge , and last- hop . Moreover, it proposes three solutions for WMNs from the perspective of protocol stock design : layered cooperative mechanism, relay ARQ mechanism and multi- hop mechanism.

Energy conservation is an important issue for wireless Mesh network. The Quorum energy conserving mechanism, discussed in this article , is quite suitable to wireless Mesh networks because it is insensitive to network scale , host density, mobility and multi- hop . Originally designed for the Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) environment, the Quorum mechanism can work in two modes : synchronous and asynchronous , according to the difficulty of clock synchronization . Currently, the research on Quorum energy conserving systems focuses on energy efficiency optimization and adaptive system. As for other issues , such as the collaboration between synchronous and asynchronous working modes , and the cross - layer design for integrating Quorum mechanism- bas ed energy conservation with power control and MAC routing , there is much research to do .

With the increasing popularity and rising demand for high - rate wireless Internet access , traditional wireless access networks such as cellular network and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) are facing some challenges . The Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is emerging as a flexible and low- cost alternative to provide multi- hop communications , supporting applications such as last- mile Internet delivery. The WMN has also become a promising technology in the merging of wireless networks . Some key technologies for the WMN networking , including network configuration , power control, mobility management, access control, and routing protocols , are analyzed ; the routing protocol design in WMN and mobile Ad hoc network are compared . An example of WMN testbed based on WLAN and second - layer switching technology is given .

As the next- generation mobile broadband networks , Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) continue to improve the mobile broadband performance and capacity by allowing operators to leverage new spectrum with wider bandwidths of 10 MHz and more . This will in turn enable the operators to address exciting market opportunities and service proliferation in high tele - density areas . This article discusses the drivers for the next- generation mobile broadband networks , and market opportunities of UMB and LTE. There are at least three key drivers for the networks : increasing device capabilities ; growing mobile data consumption ; and maintaining operator profitability. The opportunities include laptops , Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs ) and fixed broadband access , premium Video on Demand (VOD)/Music on Demand (MOD) services , multimedia upload and exchange services , consumer electronics and business applications for vertical markets .

Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) has acquired a patchwork of systems and processes that makes it difficult to cost- efficiently troubleshoot network faults , launch new services quickly, and track and tune the performance of services once delivered . This patchwork also results in increased operational and capital expenditures , so there is an obvious need for ETC to improve and evolve the network and service management environment. Evolving ETC s network and service management systems and processes shall be done in a well organized phased approach . ZTE is the first choice for ETC to assume this challenging responsibility and provide the National Network Operation Center (NNOC) solution .
