The Internet has made an important part of the national information infrastructure of China. Without the Internet, social informationization cannot be popularized to an extent as today. Upon the coming of a new year, we especially invited Mr. Jiang Lintao, a famous communication expert and the chief engineer of China Academy of Telecommunication Res earch of the Ministry of Information Industry, to give us his opinions on the opportunities and challenges brought by the Internet.
According to Mr. Jiang, the appearance of the Internet has brought great impact on telecommunications networks. It has broken the monopoly of the telecom industry in telecom services and promoted the development of technologies. Characterized by continuous innovation and aggressiveness, Internet services guarantee their dominating position in broadband networks, and put the telecom industry in a quite passive position. The telecom industry is still looking for new development direction and breakthroughs in technology so as to regain its leading position.
Mr. Jiang also pointed out that the future of both telecom networks and the Internet should be next generation network, which will be the main body of the future national information infrastructure. The ess ential features of the next generation network should be as follows: it should be secure and trustworthy enough to safeguard users rights, nationals ecurity and socialstability; it should be s calable enough to allow sustainable development; it should be compatible with current main technologies, co- exist with them and allow their graceful evolution; and it should provide a network platform for everybody to innovate.

The ongoing research on secure and trustworthy issues in next generation Internet technology is still insufficient. China has achieved some progress in the field of the trusted next generation Internet. Under the support of the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), Tsinghua University and other units have completed the program named Research on Critical Technologies and Demonstration Applications of the Trusted Next Generation Internet , which targets the secure and trustworthy problems existing in the current Internet. With focus on tackling the technical problem of authentic address access in the Internet, a prototype system for trusted Internet infrastructure , security service and typical applications are designed and implemented . It is expected that the trusted next generation Internet will support the trusted computer network, trusted telecom network and trusted broadcast & TV network applications .

As the information network plays a more and more important role globally, the traditional network theories and technologies , especially those related to network security, can no longer meet the network development requirements . Offering the system with secure and trusted services has become a new focus in network res earch . This paper first discusses the meaning of and aspects involved in the trusted network. According to this paper, the trusted network should be a network where the network s and users behaviors and their results are always predicted and manageable . The trustworthiness of a network mainly involves three aspects : service provider, information transmission and terminal user. This paper also analyzes the trusted network in terms of trusted model for network/user behaviors , architecture of trusted network, s ervice survivability and network manageability, which is designed to give ideas on solving the problems that may be faced in developing the trusted network.

There exist serious problems in the trustworthiness (s ecurity, reliability, controllability and manageability) of the Internet. In order to solve these problems , a new- generation network architecture model, based on the research of the basic theories of new- generation Internet system, is proposed . The solution creates a switching routing model and theory for the new- generation Internet system, and defines the access identifier, generalized switching routing identifier and their mapping principles . It also establishes a pervasive s ervice system architecture and theory, defines the service identifier, connection identifier and their mapping principles . This paper discusses key technologies for the new- generation Internet system, such as access control and management, trusted routing and Quality of Service (QoS ), multi- streaming , and network monitoring and management.

Routing is the cornerstone of network architecture , and a new routing mechanism is a requisite for constructing new network architecture . The current routing mechanism of the Internet layer is basically the single next- hop routing mechanism, which is the root of transmission congestion in the network. To solve this congestion problem, a fundamental measure is to change the route selection mode of current routing mechanism to allow parallel transmission over multiple routes . Currently, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP ) is the only inter- domain routing protocol used in the Internet, but the routing system using BGP suffers scalability problem. To solve the scalability issue of the current inter- domain routing system, a new hierarchical routing system, i. e . Scalable Inter- Domain Routing Architecture (s - idra ), is suggested . In addition to scalability, the current routing system is facing other challenges including security, Quality of Service (QoS ), multicasting , mobility and dynamic network topology. Therefore , the res earch on routing protocols , especially the protocol for the new network architecture , is still a tough task and has a long way to go .

With the technological advances and market development, telecommunications networks and the Internet are converging into one universal network; meanwhile , the services provided by these two kinds of networks are integrating . Pervasive services will meet demands and expectations from all aspects . The topic has become a favorite for research in Beyond Third Generation (B3G ), Next Generation Network (NGN) and Next Generation Internet (NGI) fields . The concept of the pervasive services comes from pervasive computation and B3G . Their features include pervasiveness , mobility, transparency, QoS - guarantee , customization , adaptiveness , push , security, easiness , variety and time - to - market. 3GPP , OMA and the B3G research program of the European Union (EU) have conducted a lot of research work about the different features of pervasive services . The current hot topics in the pervasive services research include context awareness and s ervice enabling .

The Internet plays increasingly important roles in everyone s life; however, the existence of a mismatch between the basic architectural idea beneath the Internet and the emerging requirements for it is becoming more and more obvious. Although the Internet community came up with a cons ensus that the future network should be trustworthy, the concept of trustworthy networks and the ways leading us to a trustworthy network are not yet clear. This res earch insists that the security, controllability, manageability, and survivability should be basic properties of a trustworthy network. The key ideas and techniques involved in these properties are studied, and recent developments and progresses are surveyed. At the same time, the technical trends and challenges are briefly discussed. The network trustworthiness could and should be eventually achieved.

The original infrastructure of the Internet can no longer meet personalized and diversified demands of current increasing network subscribers . It has exposed many defects and shortcomings . For examples , the mechanism of using ports to distinguish services is inflexible and dangerous with the emergence of various services ; the current Internet architecture does not make use of the close relationship between network resources and services , but simultaneously maintains two processing systems for the resources and services respectively, wasting both subs cribers time and network resources ; the Internet class of s ervices granularity is not fine enough , failing to meet personalized and diversified user demands . In order to solve these problems , this paper discuss es the mechanisms and key technologies for pervasive services in the new- generation Internet. The paper focuses on the definition , classification and identifier design of personalized and diversified user services . The s ervice identifier design fulfills the unified identifier and processing of various network services , dis covers the close relationship between services and resources , and can offer personalized and diversified services according to users demands .

Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) radio - access technology enables efficient wireless transfer of IP packets at very high data rates while providing s eamless mobility and best Quality of Service (QoS ), even at the cell edges , without lowering frequency re - us e . UMB systems benefit from a highly innovative flat network architecture that simplifies the core network and network interfaces , making it easy to scale the network. One of the key principles for UMB architecture is seamless mobility. A major emphasis is placed on the design of network architecture to facilitate seamless handoffs both within the UMB network and across different technologies . Innovative concepts enable fast switching between base stations while minimizing overhead and offering simpler network interfaces . New tunneling mechanisms provide signaling exchange at the data - link layer (layer 2 ) and IP layer (layer 3 ) to enable faster mobility across the base stations . This paper discusses key features of UMB network architecture , and provides insight into various architecture design choices .
