Abstract: Because of the high bandwidth demands of multimedia data, the transmission of raw data collected at sensor nodes consumes a large amount of resources. Distributed image compression is proposed as a means of overcoming the computation and energy limitation of individual nodes by sharing the processing of tasks. In addition, it prolongs the overall lifetime of the network by assigning compression tasks to idle nodes.
