ZTE Communications Special Issue on
AI-Agent Communication Network (ACN): Architecture, Protocols and Key Technologies
AI agents, either exhibiting as embodied physical entities or software, are developing extremely fast and are believed as vital for 6G or the future Internet. The communication network shall accommodate the great potential increase of agents. AI agents will act as new users but with quite different traffic patterns, varying QoS requirements, and multi-modality type data. It is also important to enable these AI agents to communicate securely with each other anytime, anywhere, to accomplish assigned tasks. By leveraging AI agents, the communication system may make a revolutionary upgrade. Embodied AI agents in the network elements, i.e., terminals, access networks, core networks, and transport networks, will enable the system to run in a fully autonomous way. The interactions of the network asset can also be more effective with agentic syntax. Therefore, AI agents are bringing a new paradigm to network services as well as the system itself. The industry, as well as the academy, should consider how to make this happen towards the AI era.
