In the high-frequency microwave photonics field, Radio over Fiber (RoF ) technology has become a hot topic in the development of next generation broadband wireless communication technologies. In recent years, based on new optoelectronic devices that support RoF technology, several optical generation and receiving techniques of millimeter-wave subcarriers have been developed, including external modulation, radio frequency up-conversion, heterodyning and millimeter-wave modulated optical pulse generator. The development of these technologies will no doubt quicken the pace of commercialization of RoF technology.

The Radio over Fiber (RoF ) communication technology combines the technical advantages of both fiber communication and wireless mobile communication to solve the problems of bandwidth, flexibility and electromagnetic interference. Research of the technology is drawing wide concerns around the world. However, high cost becomes a drawback of this technology at present. In this article the RoF Multi-System Access (RoFMA ) scheme is proposed. The scheme makes use of the Optical Time Division Multiplexing (OTDM ) and multi-system multiplex/de-multiplex technologies to lower the access cost. The article also predicts good development and market prospect of the RoFMA technology.

The optical communication technology features low cost, wide band, low loss, and anti-electromagnetic interference performance. By combining the optical communication technology with the radio millimeter wave communication system, the Millimeter Wave Radio over Fiber (MM-RoF ) system boasts a lot of advantages, including wide band, small size, light weight, low cost, low loss, and resistance of electromagnetic interference as well as high transmission quality. The MM-RoF technology solves the problems faced by traditional microwave transmission system at the millimeter wave band, namely, high loss and inability to resist interference efficiently. Meanwhile, it puts an end to the bottleneck of millimeter wave electronic devices and thus is deemed as with great potentials. The MM-ROF technology that supports multiple formats and services signifies one of the significant trends for future development of the MM-RoF system.

Based on the seamless integration of broadband optical and wireless access networks, millimeter-wave Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology is considered to be a promising solution for the next generation access networks which will provide high capacity and flexibility with low cost. But due to its large cost to realize, the system architecture needs to be optimized. In the millimeter-wave optical generation part, optical heterodyning method can be introduced to generate a high-frequency millimeter-wave signal using a low-frequency signal source. And the system efficiency can be greatly improved based on injection-locking of a semiconductor laser. In the downlink, the transmission distance can be greatly enhanced using single-sideband modulation. And the single-mode modulation (single-sideband modulation) based on an injection-locked semiconductor laser is a much simpler solution. In the uplink, direct modulation of optical heterodyning signal can be used to realize the down-conversion of uplink millimeter-wave signal which simplifies the receiver structure at the centre office. In the wavelength division multiplexing millimeter-wave RoF duplex system, the wavelength reuse in both downlink and uplink can save the wavelength resource in the whole system, which improves its efficiency.

This article puts forward long- reach and high-performance Radio over Fiber (RoF ) Communication Systems. Two schemes are proposed for solving the transmission restriction factors of the RoF system and verifies the system through experiments. One scheme is 40 GHz RoF system based on external modulation with odd-order sideband-suppressed. The other one is 40 GHz Optical Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM ) system based on Optical Carrier-Suppression (OCS ),external modulation. Both theory and experiment prove that the two systems allow not only low chromatic dispersion, but also long-distance transmission.

The merging of optical communication and wireless communication is a tendency in the development of future communication. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM ) technology is becoming a core technology in the physical layer of next generation wireless communication system. Taking advantages of both wireless communication and optical communication, OFDM Radio over Fiber (OFDM-RoF ) system is characterized by high speed, large capacity and high spectral efficiency. However, it still has some problems to be addressed, including dispersion and nonlinearity effects. The nonlinearity effect of fiber and modulator can be mitigated by PAPR reduction algorithms, the dispersion effect can be eliminated using Cyclic Prefix (CP ) and channel estimation, and the fiber nonlinearity can be reduced by techniques such as digital phase conjugation, Partial Carrier Filling (PCF ), nonlinearity precompensation and serial correlation reduction.

The mobile multicast technology has been a research hotspot in the wireless Internet field in recent years. Quite a large part of its applications requires the reliability in a mobile environment to be equivalent to that provided by wireline links. However, the inherent features of a mobile environment, that is, high error rate of links and dynamically changing multicast members’locations, are great difficulties for mobile multicast, let alone reliable mobile multicast. The IPv4-based reliable mobile multicast algorithms come with two different design philosophies. A part of the algorithms is to be improved for better reliability by solving existing algorithm- related problems; while other algorithms are to implement reliable mobile multicast with new function entities introduced to guarantee reliability.

The Remote Radio Head (RRH ) over Fiber system is a new distributed network coverage mode. It processes the baseband parts concentratively by separating the baseband and Radio Frequency (RF ). It moves the RF modules using fibers from the Base Stations (BSs ) to the remote RF units. These RF modules are placed on the stations to be covered. This solution saves many equipment rooms required by conventional solutions. Meanwhile, it supports RRH over a large number of fibers through high-capacity macro BSs to realize the conversion between capacity and coverage. In addition, the RRH system also supports the coverage in other situations, such as high-speed railways and ultra-long distance. It is one of the most widely used technologies in the 3G network.

The High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA ) technology is employed for the data service in the Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA ) mobile communication system. Theoretically, the HSDPA peak data throughput per Time Slot (TS ) available in the terminals reaches 560 kb/s. Since the data service often occurs indoors, flexible TS allocation between uplink and downlink is applied in TD-SCDMA networking. That is, TS1 and TS2 are uplink time slots and TS3, TS4, TS5 and TS6 are downlink time slots in the indoor cell; and symmetry TS allocation is made for the outdoor cell. In the intra-frequency cell network, it can cause intra-frequency interference between cells. So the research on the intra-frequency crossed time slots interference is done and the suggestions on the intra-frequency crossed time slots networking strategy are proposed in this paper.
